Minor localized flooding possible due to rainfall today
ABCA staff are monitoring an approaching weather system which has the potential to bring an estimated 30 mm of rain to our watershed today and overnight into Friday. There exists the potential for isolated thunderstorms this evening as well which could bring an additional 10-15mm of rainfall to some areas.
Ground conditions across the ABCA watershed remain wet due to the recent snowmelt and 10-20 mm of rainfall Wednesday. It is expected that any precipitation that falls today and tomorrow will quickly runoff into streams and rivers that are already flowing above normal.
Based on present forecasts, flows are expected to increase late in the day today and remain high through the weekend. Any riverine flooding is likely to be minor in nature and limited to traditional floodplain areas.
Municipal staff should monitor local drainage problem areas.
Residents are reminded to please use caution near all watercourses as waters may be fast-moving and higher than normal. Slippery and unstable streambanks and extremely cold water temperatures will create additional hazards.
This message will remain in effect until 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2015, unless local conditions warrant further updates. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will provide an update if required.
